Tour the Local Wine Route
In the Area
The vineyards here are surrounded by nature reserves and bathed by cool south Atlantic breezes. We invite you to experience some of South Africa’s finest wines right from the farms themselves on a tailored tour, catered especially for you.
Hemel en Aarde Valley
This valley – meaning “Heaven and Earth” – is home to over 15 wine farms, most of which feature in the official Cape Wine Route. These farms all offer their visitors a variety of excellent award-winning wines, usually paired on the estate with specialised canapés, or served to the accompaniment of delicious dishes and desserts.
Our well informed and passionate team at Birkenhead House knows this valley well and can put together a tailored tour to suit your preferences and fit your schedule. Combining good food, world-class wine, and extraordinary botanical surroundings, aptly described as seeing both heaven and earth.
Hemel en Aarde half-day wine tour
Before heading up the Hemel en Aarde wine route behind Hermanus, you’ll stop at the Rotary drive lookout point to take in the views of Walker Bay to truly orientate yourself in this unique wine region of South Africa.
This route incorporates the wine farms of Hamilton-Russell (Bordeaux), Bouchard Finlayson (Burgundy), and Sumaridge (Bordeaux/Rhône). You’ll get to choose two of these three options depending on your preference and spend the next two to three hours visiting the farms, meeting the winemakers, and enjoying the combination of fine wine and food.
Hemel en Aarde full-day wine tour
This is a four-to-five-hour excursion visiting three wine farms in the Hemel en Aarde Valley, starting with Hamilton Russell Vineyards and Bouchard Finlayson, and adding a third wine farm of your choice from a selection including Newton Johnson, Spookfontein, Ataraxia, or Creation.
This region’s close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean gives it a cooler climate, producing excellent wines that like a heavier clay-based soil. While still relatively undiscovered (many like it that way!), some of these wineries are receiving international acclaim and awards.
Stanford full-day wine tour
This five-hour-long tour takes you along the Stanford Wine Route to the east of Hermanus. Stop for wine tastings at Stanford Hills Estate, which has a wine cellar incorporated into one half of an aeroplane hangar on the farm, and Walker Bay Estate with its 15-year-old cabernet sauvignon vineyards and sauvignon blanc grapes grown on a limestone outcrop.
Enjoy the winemakers ’ stories and process, and taste the flavours produced by this unique climate and soil. Then, move on to some beer-tasting at the Birkenhead Brewery and finish off at the Overberg Honey Company for a local honey tasting.
