Sigagule Crèche
Royal Malewane
Investing in a brighter future
A lack of affordable childcare can prevent people getting better jobs. Providing safe and stimulating learning environments changes this equation.
Since 2009, we’ve been helping to create meaningful change in the lives of the children at Sigagule Crèche, a centre for children aged 6 months to 4½ years old. This facility started life with just one small classroom, no running water and only primitive toilet facilities.
In 2010 Royal Malewane implemented a teacher-training program for the staff at the crèche (as well as several other rural pre-schools in the immediate area), so that the children could receive an introductory education curriculum to prepare them for further schooling. The children have also benefited from guaranteed meals, more social interaction and early childhood development (ECD) opportunities.
Latest update
Funding from Royal Malewane guests has enabled The Royal Portfolio Foundation to build and maintain additional classrooms, two toilet blocks, a kitchen and a dining hall. We have also supplied mattresses for the children to nap on, as well as stationery.
In 2022, we provided 450 fruit and vegetable seedlings (tomatoes, spinach, cabbage, onions and peppers) to give Sigagule a helping hand as they establish a sustainable organic vegetable garden. The produce is already being used to make the kids’ meals more nutritious and interesting.
Better nutrition means that the learners can enjoy improved health, and focus on their studies. By helping to look after the vegetable garden, they can learn about biology and botany, and develop their sense of responsibility.
